NYANGA-A HABITUAL thief who had relocated to a cave in a mountain committed suicide as police had cornered him and his arrest was imminent.
On August 1, 2024 Panashe Sagwiza (22) ran away from home where he was staying with his grandmother, Silvia Mugobo in Taengwa Village under Chief Saunyama in Nyanga.
Panashe went on to stay in a cave in Gomorehari Mountain in the same area committing crimes ranging from house breaking and petty thefts while keeping the proceeds in his adopted house.
As the spate of robberies intensified the community decided to make a report at Nyanga Police who dispatched a patrol team all over the area to arrest Panashe.
On March 9 the patrol team was deployed again and they managed to raid Panashe’s base, but he escaped.
The police recovered various household goods hidden in the cave.
On March 15 at around 8am Michael Chitsara (50) from Tamunetsa Village under Chief Saunyama in Nyanga who was heading cattle in the area stumbled upon Panashe’s body hanging from a tree branch.
Chitsara reported the matter to the police who took the body which was already in an advanced state of decomposition to Nyanga Hospital for a postmortem.
Manicaland Province acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the matter to The Midweek Watch.
