Catholic lawyers open legal year with mass

MASVINGO CITY- Roman Catholic Church lawyers and members of the legal fraternity in Masvingo Diocese will this week mark the opening of the new legal year with a traditional mass invoking the Holy Spirit for guidance, wisdom, and justice in their work.

Event coordinator and prominent human rights lawyer and former City of Masvingo Mayor Collen Maboke confirmed the development to The Midweek Watch.

 He said the event which will take place on Thursday January 29, 2026 at St Peter and Paul Cathedral with its key focus being to highlight the intersection of faith and law, calling for justice, integrity and compassion.

“As Roman Catholic legal practitioners in Masvingo Diocese, we are going to open our legal year with a traditional mass invoking the Holy Spirit for spiritual guidance, wisdom and justice in our work.

“This Legal year opening mass for Zimbabwe Catholic Lawyers Guild is being celebrated under the theme: Synodality and law: Listening Dialogue and Justice in Service of the Gospel.

“As catholic professionals, we are guided by the Holy Spirit and the church whenever we are executing our duty,” he said.

The mass encourages legal practitioners in the diocese to view their profession as a vocation, focusing on supporting the vulnerable and upholding ethical standards.

The mass which dates back to the 13th century offers members of the legal profession time to prepare themselves upholding ethical working standards
