GUTU-The Community Action Group for Economic Development (CAG4ED) in partnership with the Forestry Commission has donated 100 pine trees to Ward 24 in Gutu South Constituency as part of efforts to combat long standing deforestation in the area.

Manjokonjo Village in Ward 24 has experienced a significant decline in tree cover over the years, largely due to widespread cutting down of trees for firewood and other domestic uses.
The CAG4ED’s latest reforestation initiative seeks to restore natural vegetation, promote environmental sustainability and strengthen climate resilience within the community.
Speaking during the tree handover ceremony, Ward 24 Councillor Takawira Rashai said the area had suffered extensive environmental degradation and the team is a blessing in disguise.

“Our ward has lost a large number of trees over the years and this has exposed us to serious challenges such as soil erosion and rising temperatures. We urgently need to restore our environment,” said Rashai.
He urged community members to take full responsibility for nurturing and protecting the planted trees.
“These trees will only benefit us if we look after them. I encourage everyone in Ward 24 to safeguard this project for the sake of our future generations,” he added.
Meanwhile, CAG4ED national chairperson Regina Munyamani highlighted water shortages as another major challenge affecting the community, warning that it could hinder the growth of the newly planted trees.

“We are aware that water scarcity remains a serious concern in this area and without adequate water, it will be difficult for these trees to thrive,” said Munyamani.
To address the situation, she pledged support towards improving water access in the ward.

“We are committed to drilling a borehole near the planting site to ensure a reliable water supply for the trees and the surrounding community,” she said.
