MUTARE-Zanu PF has ordered miners in Manicaland province to pay a mandatory contribution of $3 000 each towards the party’s 22nd National People’s Conference.
A letter dated September 28, 2025, in The Midweek Watch’s possession signed by the Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza states that the contribution was ‘mandatory’ and must be made by October 2, sparking outrage among miners who claim the ruling party was abusing power to raise funds for partisan activities.
“As per the resolution, all miners are required to contribute a minimum of $3 000 USD towards the fundraising efforts for the conference,” reads part of the letter signed by Minister Mugadza.
The miners argue that the contribution is extortionate, given the industry’s current predicaments which include high operational costs, electricity blackouts and low mineral prices.
“Three thousand dollars? That is the money I need to feed my family, to keep my operation running. This is extortion,” shouted Nyasha Chananda, a young miner just starting to make his way in the industry.
“We understand the importance of the conference. But we are not a bank for the party’s political ambitions,” weighed in John Chinengundu.
The directive follows a provincial fundraising meeting for the Zanu PF conference, scheduled for October 13-18 in Mutare.
Critics contend that the move highlights the blurred lines between Zanu PF and the State, with government structures being used to advance party interests.
