MASHAVA-The small mining town of Mashava has been plunged into mourning as two children died instantly from alleged food poisoning leaving 14 others battling for life at a traditional beer ceremony on Monday.
Two children have died and fourteen other people are battling for their lives following a suspected food poisoning incident during a traditional beer ceremony in Mashava, Masvingo Rural on the 27th of October 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in possession of The Midweek Watch, the affected group which included both adults and children, reportedly consumed sadza and mahewu at the ritual gathering before suddenly falling ill.
Those affected experienced severe stomach pains shortly after eating.
Tragically, two minors aged three and seven years died due to the sudden illness.
National Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that four children and seven adults are currently in critical condition at Masvingo Provincial Hospital while three other victims are receiving medical treatment at Mashava Clinic.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident as they work to establish the cause of the suspected food poisoning.
