Body found in Mvuma mine shaft

MVUMA- An unidentified man’s body was discovered at Zeplin Mine in Mvuma last Tuesday.

Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the discovery of the body by Maxwell Mutakuro (27) who works at the mine.

“Police confirms holding a body of an unknown male adult which was discovered in a mine shaft in Mvuma. The incident occurred on 11 February, 2025 at about 1400 hours at Zeplin Mine in Mvuma,” said Mahoko.

According to Mahoko, Mutakura who was tasked to pump water from a 30- metre -deep shaft which has not been operational since the beginning of the rainy season descended into the shaft to inspect the water level.

He made the grim discovery of a human body submerged halfway with the lower half visible above the waterline.

Mahoko said Mutakura upon discovering the body reported the matter to police who attended the scene. 

The body was retrieved from the shaft before it was taken to Mvuma District Hospital where it is currently awaiting a postmortem to determine the cause of death.

“We are appealing to members of the public who might be missing a relative to come forward and identify the body,” he said.
