MASVINGO- Batanai HIV and AIDS Service Organisation (BHASO) has extended their condolences to three members of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) who died in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on February 14 at around 4:10pm at the 254 km peg along Mutare –Masvingo Road.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and said that five people died while 16 others were injured.
“Three people died on the spot while two others died upon admission at the Hospital. We continue to urge motorists to be safety conscious. If there is one thing we stress on is traffic safety and we continue to encourage our motorists to be cautious on the roads in order to serve lives,” said Nyathi.
Speaking to The Midweek Watch BHASO programs manager Kumbirai Mahaso said some of the deceased were VSO volunteers who had gone to Bikita for a field visit.
“As BHASO we are grieved by the death of the VSO volunteers who had gone to Bikita to facilitate field programs on climate resilience, Social exclusion and Gender Analysis(SEGA) and Sexual and Reproductive Health Services . Timing is for God but we have been robbed of our champions,” she said.
Prince Chikunya ,William Mafarachisi and Tawanda Kaponda all from VSO perished in the accident.
A Toyota Hilux vehicle travelling towards Masvingo with three passengers on board was involved in a head on collision with a Toyota Hiace kombi, travelling in the opposite direction, with 17 passengers on board.
