GWERU- Mahogany Basketball Court is using the game to fight the scourge of drug abuse and nurturing talent in the city of progress.
This was said by basketball champion and national team player, Tatenda Tswatswa at the 3 on 3 games which were held at the sports club last week.
Tswatswa who is an outstanding national team player said, instead of young people going into the streets for drugs there was now room to develop young talent for international market.
“We are grateful to Mahogany for coming up with a state of the art basketball court which is now one of the best facility for nurturing young talent in Gweru.
” To young people let me tell you that nothing is impossible, what you see being done by the big players like Michael Jordan and Cobby Brians, you can do it better because it starts here on the pitch like this one.
“It is my prayer that more of these facilities are going to be made to increase recreation facilities among young people. Sport is now one of the biggest industries which is giving a lot of people livelihoods in this world. There is no need to look down at the sport anymore,” he added.
Godfrey “Godfather” Chakurangei who is at the forefront of the transformative project said a lot of teams were travelling to be part of the games.
“A 34-team league has ignites the courts of Gweru Sports Club every Saturday night until the end of August. Teams are hailing from various corners of the nation, these teams are uniting under the banner of 3×3 basketball, symbolising camaraderie and spirited competition
“We have teams from across Zimbabwe, from Harare, Bulawayo, Zvishavane and other parts of the country. We started on July 15, 2023 and we are going to complete the league at the end of August.” he added.
The establishment of the Gweru basketball courts are being funded by Mahogany Lighting and Sound and Bowling Club owner, Raiz Raza as part of efforts to unite youths in the fight against substance abuse and the projects are set to expand
