ZVISHAVANE-Police in the Midlands Province have confirmed the death of a 9 months old baby in a fire inferno that broke out in a shack where the toddler was sleeping on Tuesday afternoon in Mandava Suburb of Zvishavane.
Midlands Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko told The Midweek Watch that the deceased’s mother went to take a bath at a public toilet across the road leaving her two children (boys) a 3 year old and the now deceased 9 month old baby.
The baby was sleeping on a foam rubber mattress in their make-shift house while the 3 year old was playing outside.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be established and police investigations are underway,” said Mahoko.
The victim’s mother was later informed by a neighbour as she was out bathing that her house was on fire but the baby was already dead.
The baby sustained burns on the head and upper body.
