MASVINGO-Alert police officers thwarted a car theft attempt in the downtown area of Masvingo City last week, recovering the stolen vehicle and arresting the suspect.
According to Masvingo Province police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, the incident occurred on October 18 around 11:20 a.m. along Leopold Takawira Street.
Clayton Nyakanyanga had parked his black Honda Fit near Windows Hardware, leaving the keys in the ignition and the doors unlocked.
While Nyakanyanga was inside the store, 24-year-old Tinashe Moyo of Runyararo West allegedly jumped into the vehicle and drove off.
Nyakanyanga immediately reported the theft to the police, who tracked down the vehicle to the Runyararo area leading to the arrest of Moyo who was driving the $4,500 car recklessly.
Upon his apprehension, Moyo admitted to the theft, Inspector Dhewa said.
He is expected to appear in court soon.
Dhewa urged the public to prioritize vehicle security by always locking doors, keeping valuables out of sight, and never leaving keys in the ignition.
