As the uncertainty surrounding the stop order and contract terminations by the USAID continues to unfold, BHASO is deeply concerned about the devastating impact on community members and people living with HIV.
The unprecedented information vacuum, from donors to governments to the community, has created an atmosphere of fear, anxiety, and desperation.
FEARS OF ART SHORTAGES AND LIVES AT RISK
Rumors of potential ART shortages in Zimbabwe and other countries reliant on donor funding have sent shockwaves through the community. People living with HIV are terrified that they will no longer have access to life-saving treatment, leaving them vulnerable to opportunistic infections and death.
COMMUNITY IN CRISIS
The effects of this uncertainty on the community are already being felt:
– Increased stress and anxiety: Community members are living in fear, unsure of what the future holds.
– Disruption of treatment: The potential ART shortage threatens to disrupt treatment regimens, putting lives at risk.
– Loss of livelihoods: Contract terminations and funding cuts have resulted in job losses, exacerbating poverty and vulnerability.
– Erosion of trust: The lack of transparency and communication from donors and governments has eroded trust within the community.
URGENT CALL TO ACTION
I urge the USAID, donors, governments, and stakeholders to take immediate action to address this crisis:
– Restore funding and contracts*: Ensure uninterrupted access to ART and essential services.
– Communicate transparently: Provide clear and timely information to alleviate fears and uncertainty.
– Support community resilience: Invest in community-led initiatives to mitigate the impact of funding cuts.
The lives of people living with HIV depend on it.
