A View from the Mango Tree: Wellness Wednesdays transform Mwenezi

Date:

What began as a modest wellness and fitness initiative has grown into a powerful movement in Mwenezi.

Every Wednesday, Neshuro comes alive with energy and joy as civil servants, teachers, council workers, and community members gather for what has become a therapeutic escape from the daily grind. Miss Musara a teacher at St Vitalis acknowledged, ‘Kana tiri pano hatifungi kuti tonobika nei. I just wish the week had two Wednesdays.’

The programme, initially targeting government workers, now sees participation from staff at Mwenezi District Hospital, Mwenezi Government High School, Chingami Primary School, St Vitalis Primary, and several ministries. Even council attachees are actively involved, thanks to the support of local authorities.

Special thanks go to school heads Mr. Chuma, Mr. Gore, and Mr. Phiri, as well as the Ministry of Health and other departmental leaders. Their backing has been instrumental. Mwenezi RDC CEO Mr. Albert Chivanga, PSC District Head Mr. L. Gondo, Dr. Matibiri (District Medical Officer), and Honourable Master Makope, Member of Parliament for Mwenezi North, have also lent strong support. When his schedule allows, Honourable Makope even joins the sessions himself.

What’s remarkable is how this movement has spread beyond the civil service—it’s catching on with the wider community. While the sessions aren’t competitive, the atmosphere is electric. They begin with an energizing Zumba workout led by Coach Tanyaradzwa Nyangaridzo, followed by games such as tug of war, volleyball, netball, and soccer for both men and women. The result? Sweat, laughter, and a sense of release.

In a time when stress, economic hardship, and rising health concerns like hypertension plague many, this initiative is proving to be more than just fun—it’s a lifeline. “No one could think of taking their life after such a session,” one participant remarked. “It’s pure therapy.”

Mr. Gondo from the Public Service Commission praised the initiative, calling it “grand” and urging for its expansion district-wide. “I shared photos on some work platforms, and they loved the concept,” he said. Mr. Ruzvidzo from the Ministry of Sports, Arts and Recreation echoed the sentiment: “No one will be left behind. Even the elderly need this—to revive their spirits and refresh their minds.”

Last week’s edition, held at the Mwenezi Government High School grounds, saw a record turnout and even more enthusiasm. Contacted for comment from Ghana, where he is on parliamentary business, Hon. Makope shared his delight: “This is a brilliant initiative, especially for the civil service. All work and no play makes John a dull boy. I hope to see it rolled out across the country.”

The Neshuro Wellness and Fitness Programme is even set to engage with Masvingo Town Council soon—dates to be announced. One thing is clear: wellness and fitness in Mwenezi have indeed reached the next level. This is just a view—from the mango tree.
