A view from the mango tree- Of polls and poles; boardrooms and bedrooms.

Date:

My readership has been questioning where i have been, well I have been on sabbatical to concentrate on the just ended primary elections.

A lot of drama took place across the country especially issues to do with ‘missing’ cell registers and other election malpractice as contenders battled for a ticket to the August House to either sleep or represent the masses.

Dexter Nduna during the campaign journey based on a video clip that made rounds on social media knelt and begged the voters to stand by him.

As they say in my home area, ‘Mombe haikoreri pamarket.’ The electorate couldn’t be fooled by his incongruous clown show. They crucified him for his failure to deliver what he had promised them during his tenure and decided not to give him another opportunity.

I guess Themba ‘Bhuru’ Mliswa has the last laugh now following their altercation during a parliamentary session where they threatened each other in the full view of the other legislators.

Technology never let us down, the scuffle made its way into the social media domain.

Back to Primary elections in Mwenezi, down in Boterere Miss Priscilla Moyo booked a ticket back to Parliament with her female counterpart in the East Sheila Moyo outsmarting Yunis Omar, Advocate Mberesi, Muzenda among a host of other aspirants.

The list of contenders was very long for Mwenezi West and East while Mwenezi North a new constituency as a result of delimitation had only three contestants, Master Makope, Tongai Matutu and new kid Peter Shotere.

Master was the sitting MP for Mwenezi East before delimitation, the new constituency was vacant. Tongai Matutu after he decided to disembark from the MDC train decided to cross over to ZANU PF and was very eager to win this parliamentary seat.

To the ZANU PF faithfuls, he is a repentant son while his former allies term him a political prostitute and a betrayal to the ‘revolution.’ Switching of political sides to me is evidence that some political figures are self seeking charlatans who never have their followers at heart.

Anyway, ‘welcome home prodigal son,’ were the welcome remarks by the President to Matutu. He has a huge task of preaching to the people in his home area who he had converted to the opposition during his days there. Up to now the area around Negari has considerable number of opposition faithfuls.

That speaks volumes of the legislator, I am hopeful he will re-evangelise them back to the People’s Party. Whatever the case Matutu was somehow disillusioned into believing he will win the seat on a silver platter.

His decision to contest in the election was ill-timed and may affect his political career. As a political firebrand that he once was maybe he did it for some other reason because if the truth be told as it stands Mwenezi are so in love with former headmaster, Master.

It’s quite a pity for the lawyer Matutu! He was humiliated after sounding very boastful that Master was no match for him. I guess he is licking his bruised egos now and restrategising for 2028. Shotere using ZINWA vehicles and spearheading government programmes of drilling boreholes thought he would garner more votes than his fellow kinsmen in the race only to come second.

The votes he got were as a result of Murabharari a councillor of the people who influenced his supporters in Ward 7 to vote for Shotere instead of the sitting MP because of personal differences he had with the latter.

Believe me you, the level of competition in the just ended elections was just something else. Is it the economic downturn or the ‘democracy’ hand by the 2nd Republic? This year’s elections won’t be a walk in the park for any of the contenders, it seems people feel that they have that mandate to improve their welfare and that of the people they wish to stand for.

CCC did their primary nominations and news from the rumourmill is that Mwenezi North will be represented by Patrick Mapfumo in the August House race and Jervas Manyangire in the local authority race for Ward 1.

These gentlemen have been very silent and seemingly apolitical but they have thrown their interest in running for the race. It is going to be a tough election this year.

These happenings in my constituency are a template of the situation in every part and parcel of Zimbabwe. May the polls be peaceful and be devoid of use of ‘poles’ or :matanda.’ May the voice of the electorate speak but whatever the case, ZANU PF strongholds like Mwenezi are no home for the opposition.

Politics is very sensitive and arduous so let me leave it. Easter was different this year I was deep down in Boterere so I passed through Manyuchi and I caught up with this old man Mavhuna a local fisherman in the midst of a discussion on marriage. I qoute, ‘Marriage is something that needs to be enjoyable.

It emanates from friendship saka kuchinzi boyfriend and girlfriend. It is not about enemies. You need to enjoy being in marriage not to be enslaved. A bedroom should not be a boardroom maunotongwa uchichuchisiwa… ‘ These lines to me needed to be aired out to you my adored readership. They are a treasure I never thought would find in such a subtle and simple place like Manyuchi.

Marriage is an area I may be a novice in but research has taught me that most marriages are broken. Marriage is a closed windowless and doorless room where the people outside are scrambling to get in while those inside are grappling to go out. Men take advantage of their spouses and treat them willy-nilly with the protection of cultural norms which favour male chauvhinism.

Well, I share the same sentiments with Mr Mavhuna, the matrimonial bedroom should not be a boardroom of stamping of authority and unfair treatment of the female gender. It is high time that feminists encourage women to let go of abusive and toxic marriages which have damaged not only women in these ‘circus unions’ but the children too.

Women economic empowerment is still a thorn in the flesh for most rural communities where society believe marriage is a must have for a woman. A society that looks down upon single women whether divorced or widowed.

They are viewed as loose and they are vulnerable to rape and sexual abuse since most men think women live for sex. This is treatment of women as sex objects and society has derogatory names used against women like ‘mvana.’ Most women stay in very abusive marriages for fear of name calling.

It’s quite a pity for the female gender. There are also unique and rare situations where men are being abused and are enslaved by the wives. I know of one woman in a certain village who treats hid husband as trash, letting him do the dishes, wash his clothes and ridiculed before his children.

The woman is the boss and runs things. Zvohwisa vurombo, I think the woman also decides on conjugal matters. Anyway, let me not exhaust my ink on this before speaking about London and sports.

The Manchester City lieutenants continue to shine in their Championship league safari with their Norwegian forward Halland topping the score sheet with eleven goals.

Bayern Munich tipped as favourites were beaten three goals to nil in a pulsating match at Etihad. Manchester City could not afford to disappoint their fans at their home ground.

Erling Halland is considered one of the best players in the world, he is known for his speed, strength, and finishing inside the box

Another English team Chelsea who have recently established a rapport for losing went down again to Real Madrid, another blow to the Stamford Bridge followers. Real Madrid used their home advantage to humiliate the Blues with a two nil defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu. Chelsea’s ship sank exactly the same day the Titanic sunk a century ago. Coincidence?

I bet it isn’t especially on the fact that yesterday was the Blues fan base believed their ship was unsinkable. The unsinkable Chelsea ship just like the Titanic was sunk yesterday. Soccer is entertaining and brings people from all walks of life together. Like soccer, let our politics be unifying and peaceful as we move towards the harmonised polls.

No poles please and may the matrimonial homes be bedrooms and not boardrooms. I am out!
