Mwenezi Government High School once again proved that excellence knows no boundaries when it hosted its annual speech and prize-giving day, a celebration that left parents, dignitaries, and learners in awe.
In a symbolic break from the old adage that “a prophet is not honoured in his homeland,” the school invited one of its own—former student, teacher, and now Member of Parliament for Mwenezi North, Master Makope as guest of honour. His presence highlighted the institution’s proud tradition of nurturing leaders of substance.
The vibrant ceremony was filled with ululations, cheers, and emotional moments as learners were honoured for their achievements in academics, discipline, sport, and character. In an age where the value of education is often questioned, Mwenezi Government High sent a powerful message: education is alive, thriving, and transformative.
The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Mwenezi Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer Albert Chivanga, the District Development Coordinator’s Office represented by Masukume, officials from the District Schools Inspectorate, and Mwenezi Benefactors Group represented by Tivonge Shumba. Also in attendance were school heads from across the district: Mr. Maranda, Masogwe Primary, Rufaro, Masogwe Secondary, Avhunga Secondary, and St Vitalis Primary, among others.
MP Makope praised the leadership of Mwenezi High head Chuma and the School Development Committee chaired by Shoko Pinias, urging continued alignment with the Heritage-Based Education 5.0 Model, which promotes innovation and industrialisation. He also applauded government initiatives such as the Presidential Scholarship Programme and the “Work for Fees” scheme, which support disadvantaged yet talented learners in accessing higher education.
Mwenezi Government High, with an enrolment of 1,180 students and over 70 teaching and non-teaching staff, has cemented its status as a beacon of inclusivity and academic rigour. Among the day’s outstanding achievers were Reason Ncube, who scored an exceptional 30 points at A-Level, and athlete Chipochashe Manyonga, who represented Zimbabwe in an international relay competition, bringing home a silver medal.
Teachers and staff were equally celebrated. Food and Textile Technology expert Jane Pugeni, who achieved remarkable 2024 results, proudly declared, “Isu tinoshanda!” (We work!). Dube, honoured for his excellence in both academics and athletics coaching, received a standing ovation from parents and colleagues alike.
The ceremony was ably guided by master of ceremonies, Chidya, whose academic gown was both symbolic and commanding—a reminder of the dignity and importance of education.
In a practical show of commitment, MP Makope donated 100 bags of cement to support infrastructural development at the school and pledged to help address the school’s long-standing water challenges.
For Mwenezi High, this was more than a prize-giving event. It was a declaration of purpose, a celebration of heritage, and a vivid reminder that under the mango tree of tradition and progress, glamour and excellence continue to flourish. Its just a view!!!
