GWERU-The City of Gweru has resolved to lease its 10-hectare Mtapa Gafa grounds to the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) for 50 years to facilitate the development of a technical centre and Midlands regional head office.
The resolution was passed at Monday’s ordinary council meeting, subject to approval by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works and compliance with all statutory and council procedures.
ZIFA’s proposed development includes a regional office, technical and high performance training facilities, as well as grassroots and youth academy infrastructure.
Acting Town Clerk Owen Masimba informed councillors that ZIFA had requested a long-term lease to ensure security for its investment.
“ZIFA intends to construct a state-of-the-art technical centre and regional head office,” said Masimba.
He added that the project has the potential to stimulate economic activity and enhance Gweru’s sporting profile.
Mtapa, one of Gweru’s oldest high-density suburbs, has a long standing association with football and has produced several notable players.
The proposed development is expected to transform Gafa grounds into a regional hub for player development, technical training, and football administration.
ZIFA indicated that its master plan will deliver multipurpose football facilities while expanding opportunities for grassroots and youth development.
Council recommended approval of the lease and proposed development, but resolved that the detailed terms and conditions be presented to councillors for review prior to signing the agreement.
