A case of child murder has happened at Mkwasine in Chiredzi after a five-year-old boy, Anenyasha Munangi, was brutally assaulted to death by his own cousin brother, Freedmore Manyenya (24), on 11 August 2025.

The shocking incident occurred in Village 3C, Ruware, under the policing jurisdiction of ZRP Mkwasine.

According to ZRP Masvingo Province Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, Manyenya, who resides in the nearby Gutsaruzhinji B area, had visited his sister, Sipiwe Manyenya (25), who is married and lives in Village 3C.

Upon arriving around 2PM, Manyenya informed his sister and her husband that their mother was unwell.

Concerned, the couple immediately left for their mother’s homestead, leaving Manyenya at the house.

During their absence, the accused reportedly went to a nearby shopping centre and returned later, where he found the deceased and other children playing.

Young Munangi excitedly ran to greet his cousin, but in a shocking turn, Manyenya began assaulting the boy slapping him multiple times on the cheeks, kicking his head, and ultimately grabbing him by the leg and slamming his head against the ground and nearby logs.

Disturbed by the child’s screams, neighbours rushed and managed to restrain the accused.

Munangi was immediately rushed to Mashoko Hospital, but was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival. His body was transferred to the hospital mortuary.

Police swiftly arrested Manyenya, who is now in custody and is expected to face murder charges.
