GWERU- The City of Gweru has issued owners of dilapidated buildings in the CBD a two months ultimatum to have them fixed or risk closure, The Midweek Watch can report.

In a statement, Gweru City Council Acting Town Clerk Livingston Churu said the dilapidated buildings pose a threat to public safety.
“Please be advised that the council urgently requests owners of buildings to carry out the required maintenance and repair works on their buildings within the next 60 days from the 6th of June 2025.
“This is in line with the Model building by-laws of 1978 that prohibits any building that is dangerous to its neighbourhood.
“Failure to comply with the above notice will result in council closing all affected buildings,” he said.
He encouraged the building owners to comply with the order.
A number of buildings in the CBD are by and large in a ruinous, dilapidated, and unsightly state, showing signs of being dangerous, neglected, and likely to cause injury to the general public and to values of adjacent properties.
These buildings require different actions depending on their state(s) and conditions.
These actions range from assessment by competent structural engineers, face lifting, sprucing up to demolition and reconstruction of approved standard structures.
Most of the buildings which are in dilapidated and neglected state are situated in the area bound by Tongogara Avenue, First Street, Jason Moyo Avenue and Tenth Street.
