Gweru- Four suspects were arraigned before the court for assault in an incident which occurred in Woodlands Phase 2 Shops last week on 1 April 2023.

The four were charged with assault in Contravention of the Criminal Law [Codification and Reform] Act, Chapter 9.23 when they appeared before Gweru Magistrate on Tuesday 4 April 2023.

One of the accused Aaron Johanes was convicted and awaits sentence while his three accomplices were remanded in custody to 17 April for further trial.

Kennedy Fuzane (23) and his friends were drinking beer at Woodlands Shopping Center when they approached Johanes accusing him of having assaulted one of them the previous day. They started assaulting him using a hockey stick.

Johanes grabbed the hockey stick and retaliated hitting Fuzane on the head using the same hockey stick. Fuzane fell down and lost consciousness while Johanes ran away.

The matter was reported to the police and Fuzane was referred to Gweru Provincial Hospital for treatment for head injuries where he was admitted. Fuzane’s friends remained and after locating Johanes in the vicinity of Woodlands Shopping Centre they avenged by further assaulting and stabbing him using a knife.

Johanes managed to escape and went to hospital to seek medication. As he was at the hospital, Fuzane’s friends followed intending to continue assaulting him but Police officers who were making follow-ups on the case were informed and they managed to arrest the four, Johanes, Karonga Sign (23), Sibusiso Ncube( 24) and Fuzane all of Woodlands High density suburb, Gweru.

Johanes sustained four stab wounds and is currently detained at Gweru Provincial Hospital under Police guard while his accomplices are in remand prison.
