MASVINGO – Four Mwenezi men have been arrested for allegedly murdering a mentally challenged man.
The four allegedly beat up the man to death at Makugwe Business Centre in Mwenezi on September 2, 2023, The Midweek Watch can reveal.
Honest Gumbo (22) and Tafadzwa Moyo (19) of Village Chegawa 1, Ever Shumba(21) and Tapiwa Moyo of Village Chegawa 2 under Chief Mazetese were arrested after they were seen by villagers beating the well known mentally challenged, Wilman Chikwazu.
Masvingo Province deputy Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Lorine Chanakira Ndhlovu said that the four arrested men were seen at the business centre roaming around harassing people while visibly drunk and behaving violently.
They later entered Madhawu Shop and saw the deceased holding his axe and they force marched him out of the shop threatening that if he refused, they would beat him.
A few moments later Madhawu Shop attended Sekai Shumba (38) heard the deceased screaming for help just a few meters away from the but since it was during the night and dark she could not go out to help him.
She watched the ordeal from the door and one of the suspected murderers, Gumbo went and threatened her, that is when she went back into the shop fearing for her life.
People gathered to watch the deceased being beaten and since they were scared no one helped him and the four men eventually ran away after the deceased was lying unconscious in a pool of blood.
The shop attended then went and checked the deceased if he was still alive and went to report the incident to the Police.
Some villagers who stay 5km from the shops and heard about the incident where they were having a memorial service went and effected a citizen’s arrest on Gumbo, Tafadzwa Moyo.
The two were handed over to the Police while the other two were also caught in the same night.
The Police took the body to Neshuro District Hospital for a postmortem.
