GWERU –Three people have died while several others were injured in two separate road traffic accidents that occurred in the Midlands Province this week, police have confirmed.
The Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the first fatal crash happened at around 4pm along the Harare–Bulawayo Road near Gweru when a Toyota Hilux collided head-on with a Nissan NP300.
“It is alleged that Edward Pfumbidza (27) of Madokero, Harare, was driving towards Kwekwe with four passengers on board when he attempted to overtake another vehicle at the 192km peg.
“He encroached into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with a Nissan NP300 travelling towards Kadoma,” said Insp Mahoko.
Both drivers died on the spot while the passengers sustained varying injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
In a separate accident on Saturday, at around 7:45am, one person died and two others were injured along the Harare–Masvingo Road near Mutevekwi River, Mvuma.
Police said Emmanuel Makuvaza (42) of Epworth, Harare, was driving an Isuzu vehicle with two passengers on board when the vehicle veered off the road, hit a tree, and overturned at the 178km peg.
Makuvaza sustained chest injuries and died upon admission at Mvuma District Hospital.
Inspector Mahoko urged motorists to exercise maximum caution to avoid further tragedies on the country’s roads.
“We continue to urge drivers to be extremely careful to avoid unnecessary loss of lives,” he said.
