Gweru – The Gweru City Council (GCC) has received a record 29 applications for the position of chamber secretary, according to acting town clerk Livingston Churu.

Churu stated that out of the 29 applicants, the council has shortlisted 9 candidates for interviews, which were conducted last week.

“We have received about 29 applications for the chamber secretary position, but we then shortlisted 9 candidates for the interviews which were conducted last week,” Churu said.

The acting town clerk further revealed that the local authority will forward three names to the Local Government Board for further processing after the full council meeting held yesterday approved the shortlisted candidates.

Of the 9 shortlisted candidates, 7 were from outside the council, while 2 were GCC employees, Churu said.

The position of chamber secretary fell vacant following the departure of Vakai Chikwekwe in 2023.

Chikwekwe was appointed to the role in 2016 following the dismissal of Richard Masinire in 2010 on allegations of nepotism.

The chamber secretary plays a crucial role in providing administrative, secretarial and legal support to the council.

The incumbent is responsible for managing council meetings, ensuring legal compliance and overseeing various departments that includes Human Resources, Administration, Estates and Valuation, Fire and Ambulance, and Municipal Police.

Meanwhile, the council is yet to fill the position of town clerk after the dismissal of Elizabeth Gwatipedza in 2019 and the recent directive from the Local Government Board to re-advertise the post.
