HARARE- An unidentified person who drowned performing Manjuzu rituals at Garimo river in Domboshava is among the 29 drowning cases recorded by the ZRP between June and August 2024.

In a statement released on Tuesday (today), the ZRP expressed concern over an increase in drowning cases between June and August 2024.

“The ZRP is concerned by drowning incidents recorded throughout the country. The Police received 29 cases of drowning between June and August 2024,” reads part of the statement.

These drowning cases occurred while victims engaged in activities such as participating in manjuzu rituals, swimming, casting fishing nets and bathing.

In July 2024, the ZRP received a drowning case in which a victim drowned while performing rituals at Garimo river in Chinamhora, Domboshava.

“In Domboshava, on 07 July 2024, a drowning incident was received by the police in which the victim drowned while performing manjuzu rituals at Garimo river, Chinamhora.

“In another drowning incident which occurred on 20th August 2024, at Harzel Dine Farm Dam, Karoi, the victim died while casting nets. Meawhile, in Kamativi, on 28th August 2024, a victim drowned while swimming in Chilonga River,” added the ZRP.

During this summer season and in the rainy season, the ZRP urged the public to take heed of safety and precautionary measures when approaching water bodies to safeguard lives.

Meanwhile, the ZRP said the 2024 firearms amnesty on voluntary surrender of firearms and ammunition is underway from the 1st of September to September 30, 2024.
