Masvingo Province has recorded a decrease in snakebite cases, with 48 cases reported between December 2024 and January 2025, down from 62 cases during the same period last year. The decline is attributed to awareness campaigns by the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

The district breakdown shows that Bikita recorded 12 cases, Chiredzi 1, Chivi 9, Gutu 8, Masvingo 14, Mwenezi 10, and Zaka 8. For the period December 2025-2026, the cases are: Bikita 12, Chiredzi 3, Chivi 2, Gutu 10, Masvingo 5, Mwenezi 5, and Zaka 12

Masvingo Provincial Medical Director Dr. Amadeus Shamu says the drop is a result of the ministry’s efforts through campaigns.

“Our campaigns are working, residents should keep up precautions like using snake repellents around homes and institutions,” said Dr Shamu.

No fatalities were reported and Dr. Shamu urged continued vigilance during the rainy season.
