MIDWEEK REPRTER
CHIREDZI-Nobert Moyo (43) of Gomora Village under Chief Mabikwa in Lupane, Mat North Province and Shepherd Taruvinga (34) from Chivichabetura Village under Chief Tshovani in Chiredzi were died from suffocation in a well they were digging at Wisdom Svosve‘s homestead.
Masvingo Province, Police Community Relations and Liaison Officer, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa told The Midweek Watch that the deceased reached a hard surface 15m underground as they were digging the well on Saturday last week and decide to use explosives to break the impasse.
“The two decided to use explosives to crack the hard surface and on the following day they entered the well, unfortunately they were choked by the smoke and died inside,” said Dhewa.
Dhewa said they entered the well at around 7am and Svosve became suspicious after more than 3 hours without seeing any movement and that is when he called out their names, but no one responded.
“Svosve immediately reached out to other villagers who came and tied a rope around his waist and lowered him into the 15m deep well, but before he had gone far he called for help as he was being choked by the explosive smoke and he was pulled out,” said Dhewa.
They reported the matter to the Police and the two bodies were retrieved by experts from the well.
