The Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the fatal crash occurred at the 200km peg of the busy highway around 11PM.
Emmanuel Kapawa (30) of Chief Nemangwe area in Gokwe was driving a Honda Fit towards Bulawayo with three passengers on board.
Upon reaching the 200km mark, he reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle but collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota Dyna.
“The impact was severe. Kapawa sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. One of his passengers, Round Mayeka (25), also of Chief Nemangwe, was pronounced dead upon admission at Kwekwe General Hospital,” said Insp Mahoko.
The other two passengers were reportedly injured and are receiving treatment, although police had not disclosed their identities or conditions at the time of posting the story.
Inspector Mahoko appealed to motorists to prioritise safety and strictly observe road regulations.
“We urge drivers to exercise extreme caution when overtaking and ensure their maneuvers are safe to avoid unnecessary loss of lives,” he said.
