ZAKA- Two men who were marooned on an island along Mutirikwi River downstream of Bangala Dam after their makeshift canoe capsized are missing with indications that they have been swept away by the heavy currents.

Civil Protection Unit (CPU) director Nathan Nkomo (pictured) confirmed the development to The Midweek Watch. He said efforts to locate their bodies are currently underway.

“I can confirm receiving a report that two of the three marooned villagers have gone missing and our rescue teams are on the ground searching for their bodies,” he said.

Nkomo warned members of the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers during the rainy season.

“The public is strongly warned not to attempt crossing flooded rivers or streams during this rainy period. Flood waters are extremely dangerous and can rise suddenly, sweeping away people, vehicles, and livestock,” he said.

Recent incidents have shown that many lives are put at risk when people try to cross rivers using unsafe methods such as makeshift canoes, swimming, or walking across flooded areas.

Residents are advised to avoid crossing flooded rivers at all times, wait until water levels have gone down before attempting to cross, use designated safe crossing points such as bridges and warn children and community members about the dangers of flooded rivers.
