GWERU-The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed two separate fatal road accidents that claimed three lives in Shurugwi and Gweru over the weekend.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the first accident occurred on October 18, 2025, around 8.30 PM, along the Gweru–Zvishavane Road, when a Foton Power truck overturned, killing two people and injuring two others.
“The vehicle, a white Foton Power truck registration number AFG 5244, was being driven by Nyasha Hove (23) of Zvishavane and had four passengers on board,” said Insp Mahoko.
“Upon reaching the 55km peg, two rear wheels dislodged, resulting in the truck veering off the road and overturning. All the occupants sustained injuries and were taken to Shurugwi District Hospital, where Dennis Ndlovu (38) and Tinashe Urayai (23) of Village 3, Mponda, Shurugwi, died upon admission.”
He said investigations were underway to establish the exact cause of the accident.
In another incident, a 36-year-old man from Mkoba 20, Progress Muranderi, died on the spot after being run over by a motor vehicle accident in Mkoba 14, Gweru, on Saturday around 11 PM.
“Muranderi was found lying along Chilimanzi Road near Nazarene Church, Mkoba 14.
Preliminary investigations indicate that he was hit by a Nissan Note motor vehicle driven by Frank Rungwe (30) of Mkoba 20, who fled the scene after the accident,” Insp Mahoko said.
He said police attended the scene after receiving a report from an anonymous caller, and the body was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary.
“On October 20, 2025, around 4 AM, the suspect, Rungwe, handed himself over to ZRP Gweru Traffic, and investigations are continuing,” added the police chief.
Police have urged motorists to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, exercise maximum caution, and adhere to all road traffic regulations to avoid unnecessary loss of life.
