MBERENGWA—The newly surfaced 30km Ngungumbane–Mataga Road has claimed the lives of two people barely a week after it was commissioned by Midlands Provincial Affairs Minister Owen Ncube.
The Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the fatal crash, which occurred on Saturday around 10pm.
Mahoko said a Mazda Demio being driven by Courage Sigodo (27), of Fortune Park in Mberengwa, was travelling towards Mataga Growth Point with three passengers on board when it veered off the road near the 9km peg and overturned several times.
Two female passengers, Emilly Charidza (33) of Mataga Growth Point and Constance Manana (29) of Fortune Park, Mberengwa, died on the spot.
The driver and another passenger escaped unhurt, police said.
Mahoko urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly on newly surfaced roads, and to adhere to traffic rules and regulations, including avoiding speeding.
