CHIMANIMANI-Two juveniles from Chimanimani under Chief Mutambara drowned in a flooded river while on their way from preschool.

The sad incident happened on January 27 at around 2:20pm when Anenyasha Chipongo (5) who was in the company of her schoolmate Moreblessing Washata (6) all from Maumani Village under Chief Mutambara were coming from preschool and tried to cross a flooded Umvumvumvu River.

The two were swept away and the other school kids who were also coming from school informed nearby villagers who came and retrieved Anenyasha’s body some 5km from the crossing point.

Moreblessing’s body is still missing.

The matter was reported at ZRP Cashel and Anenyasha’s body was taken to Mutambara Hospital for a postmortem.

Manicaland Province acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka urged parents not to let juveniles cross flooded rivers unaccompanied.

“The public is urged not to allow children to cross flooded rivers especially during the rainy season, if preschool children do not have someone to accompany them it is advised that they don’t go to school at all until the rivers subside than to risk children’s lives,” said Chinyoka.
