HARARE-There has been a 13% decrease in the number of people killed on the country’s roads between 16 and 26 December this year as compared to the same period in 2022.

In 2022, 102 people lost their lives due to road traffic accidents as compared to 87 this year between 16 and 26 December.

National Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the statistics and added that the total number of accidents during the period under review was 1 194 compared to 1 480 in 2022.

Ass Com Nyathi also said the number of people injured in the accidents recorded was 424 in 2023 compared to 289 in 2022.

Meanwhile, he also confirmed the death of five people on the spot when a New Horizon Bus travelling to Mutare collided with a truck and a Mercedes Benz at the 64km peg along Mutare-Harare Road at around 9am today.

Forty passengers were injured, 15 of them seriously, due to the accident and they are currently receiving treatment at Marondera Provincial Hospital.

“The ZRP urges drivers to be cautious and promote road safety on the roads this holiday. We remind drivers that road safety is a collective responsibility which needs the cooperation of all motorists, family vehicles, public service vehicles and haulage truck operators, among others,” said Ass Com Nyathi.
